Personal Essay
Introduction
I first came to ACLC as a sixth grader, I still remember waving hi to my friend on the way to the old blue door at the Encinal campus. A lot has changed since my first time stepping foot into the spacious center that we had back then. From Encinal, to Wood, to our home of four years on Third Street, I have become a drastically different person. I used to be a really shy kid, the thought of speaking in public would get my heart racing. I took me years gain the confidence that I have now but there is always room for improvement. I wasn’t that involved in school activities in middle school, I felt like I would never fit in if I decided to. High school marked a huge turning point for me, my viewpoint on a lot of things changed. Now, as a senior, I am proud of the achievements I have accomplished here in ACLC and I think I am making little sixth grade me proud everyday.
Personal Qualities, Work Habits and Attitudes
Throughout my years at ACLC, I have gained personal qualities that I didn’t have when I was in sixth grade. With the help of ACLC, I became a more social person. At a small school like ACLC, it’s important to know how to work and talk to everyone and I think that I have been able to accomplish that. I used to feel uncomfortable and nervous when talking to others when I was a young sixth grader but now as a senior, I don’t feel that nervous anymore. Through gaining my social skills, I have been able to create new friendships and experience new opportunities. During the past election, I was able to work as an electoral clerk to translate and assist voters. I wasn’t always the most responsible student around, I remember struggling to finish assignments the period before it was due when I was in middle school. But through practice, I am now capable of setting and reaching the goals that I set for myself. I turn things in on time and I usually get high grades on the assignments I do. As my time in ACLC progressed, I have noticed that I have become more involved in activities the school. I have given back to the school by being a leadership learner last year, running a bevy, and being a Hannah Camp counselor. I also participate in Red Cross and was awarded Rookie of the Year for my involvement in activities like the Oakland Marathon.
New Basics
Throughout my years at ACLC, I have improved many of my skills and have used them for my advantage. Mathematics is one of my strongest points, I have taken all the math courses that are given in ACLC. I have used my math skills for classes such as biology and environmental science. Science is something that I excel at and I have taken courses such as Psychology 1A, 1B and 12A to further my understanding of something that I am interested in. In total, I have taken five years of Spanish and I am fluent in Tagalog. I have used my bilingualism to help translate for new learners and create new bonds. Listening and speaking are core values that help me strive in all my classes. I am able to use my speaking skills by leading a bevy, being an MC of senior seminar, and running a small group. I also have an artistic side which I show through my passion for music. I love listening, performing and creating music.
Thinking and Reasoning Skills
Thinking and reasoning skills are crucial to surviving high school. Creative thinking is useful especially for school projects. In all of the classes that I have taken in ACLC, from calculus to creative writing, imagination has been used for projects. In Calculus, I have used my creativity to create a 3D model of a bunny. Problem solving is a skill that I have used a lot because sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned and a solution needs to be made quickly. I have used my problem skills when preparing for a CCC or for a class presentation. I lead one CCC where we had to make squares with tape in a short period of time and I was able to finish doing it before CCC started. ACLC is a visual heavy school, I can’t even count how many videos and posters I have made throughout my years of being here. I think I have been able to use my visual skills to help others understand concepts. I have made a poster that gave information about Colombia in my Spanish 3 class and I got a good grade on it.
Interpersonal Abilities
Being a learner in ACLC has taught me more than just what it takes to pass classes, but also how to work with others. As a Hannah Camp Leader, I have to participate with a group of other leaders planning the exciting event. I am able to participate as a team member to ensure the best experience for everyone involved. I can take suggestions and share ideas with my fellow team members. Last year, I led classes during Tech Day, Con Con, and Science Day. I was able to teach other learners about prototyping and reusing wine bottles by turning them into cups and vases. I have exercised my leadership through many different activities. I am in leadership, participate in Red Cross, lead a bevy, am a Hannah Camp leader, and help MC senior seminar. Through exercising my leadership I have experienced working with a diverse group of people.
Technology
ACLC is a very tech heavy school, there doesn’t go a day without me having to use a piece of technology to complete an assignment. I know how to use the technology that we have at school like the chromebooks and the computers in the center. I am aware that technology can be used for more than just social media and I also use it for school work. I know how to use spreadsheets, powerpoints, and video editing applications. I learned how to use google docs because of ACLC. When I am faced with technology problems, I can identify and solve simple problems that I face with my equipment. In digital music, sometimes I am faced with audio problems but I have learned how to solve them.
Conclusion
Over the years, I have accomplished so much here in ACLC. I have gained the confidence that I need to pursue my goals. The skills that I have acquired throughout my time here, have helped shape me and help prepare me for college and my future endeavors whatever they may be. I hope I have made little sixth grade me proud of all the I have been able to accomplish.
